What are the pros and cons of living in Washington DC?

Posted on 30 November 2008 by admin

My boyfriend has been hinting that he really wants to go back to Washington DC. He misses his friends, misses working in the city and having a place that isn’t with family. So I want to know what I’m talking about if I ask him if he wants to just leave Ohio and move there with me. I want to know for my benefit what is awesome and suckish about the area.

Pro’s
Lots of ethnic diversity
Lots of people under 40
It’s an exciting, fast paced place to live
Lots to do culturally, and for comparatively little money
Excellent public transit system
The job market is always good in DC
For the size of the city, the crime is relatively low (other than a few pocket areas that you wouldn’t be going to anyway)

Con’s
The summers are brutal w lots of humidity (although the winters are milder than Ohio)
Housing is very expensive
There are a fair number of people who are there to establish themselves in their career and are a bit shallow/superficial
The fast pace can sometimes be brutal

I’d recommend that you give it a try. You will be going with your boyfriend, so it won’t be like moving to a new city by yourself. And once you get there do activities on your own (maybe volunteering) so you get to meet friends yourself.

Good luck!

    Pros:

    Diversity of people
Great public transit (although the bus service is iffy in the suburbs)
Lots of museums, many of them free
Five professional sports teams (if you count MLS)
    Diversity of dining options
Lots of stuff to do that is free or low-cost

    Cons:

Cost of living is pretty high
Traffic is awful, and the traffic circles in DC may bollix you up
It gets bitterly cold in January and February, but maybe not as bad as Ohio
Like any big city, there is some crime, but common sense measures will help you avoid being a victim

    Awesome:

    Cheap Transportation to get around..
Lots on intresting people to meet
Always a new place opening, new places to explore
Short cold winter followed by a nice long spring
NYC is a cheap 40 buck round trip bus ride away
    Wonderful diverse museums

    Cons
Summers are hot since you are techinally in the south
Housing is insanely expensive.. and to get a place near a metro stop is even more so!
Jobs can be scarce… get one before you move!
Public Schools are terrible here, since few people who live in the city pay taxes.

    Pros: The Smithsonian

Cons: Too many tourists, horrible weather, very expensive, bad traffic, unfriendly people, bad restaurants, and generally not a nice place to live.

In other words, it’s a nice place to visit but it’s a terrible place to live.
